BYO Vessels

Already make your own pottery? Bring your bisqued pieces to life using unique alternative firing techniques.

Step 1: Prepare & Drop Off Your Vessels

Before booking your spot, please make sure your vessels meet these specific requirements so they fire safely in the kiln:

  • Vessel Count: Create 2 vessels with clear openings (minimum 4 cm diameter). Ensure walls are not trimmed too thin.
  • Size Limits: Maximum dimensions are 12 cm high × 10 cm wide/depth.
Please note: Size constraints are strictly enforced to ensure all participants' pieces fit into the kiln. Oversized pieces may result in only one vessel being loaded.
  • Clay Body: Must be made with RAKU clay (Keanes White Raku Clay is strongly recommended as it won't shrink during bisque firing).
  • Surface Finish: Smooth your vessel surface with a rib when trimming to enhance the final pattern results.
  • Bisque Temp: Bisque fire to 900°C – 1000°C.
  • Drop Off: Deliver your pieces to the studio at least 3 days prior to your scheduled class.

Step 2: Choose Your Firing Method

In this 2-hour class, you'll experiment first on a bonus ceramic dish (provided) before applying your chosen technique to your two BYO vessels. Both methods are available for $70 AUD.

Obvara

A fast-paced 12th-century Eastern European technique where hot pottery is dipped into a fermented flour-and-yeast liquid, creating rich, unpredictable, eye-like patterns and earthy textures.

Feather & Hair

A delicate, smoke-infusing technique where organic materials—like hair or bird feathers—are laid directly onto hot pottery. The heat instantly vaporizes them, leaving striking black carbon lines.

Step 3: Select Your Date & Book

Ready to fire your pieces? Pick a date that gives you enough time to make and drop off your vessels beforehand. 

You’ll select your preferred firing method (Obvara or Feather & Hair) during checkout.
